Why can I only raise my left eyebrow and not the right?
And how come I can raise my lip higher on that same side?
Why do birds run to get off the road when a car's coming? Seems like so much more effort.
Do you reckon there really was a Betsy, whose Dad or someone else thought she was a bit slow and said to her one day "Helloooo, earth to Betsy"? Come to think of it, he must've said "Heavens to Betsy" to replace a blaspheme too, poor girl.
And this is just something totally unrelated that I find gloriously real and funny. It happened to a friend who, when on work experience at age 16, went to a school for the mentally impaired. She was introduced to a very friendly, warm, special fellow who was told that C was there to do her work experience. And he said to her excitedly, "Shake-your-relations!" She had no idea what he meant, simply smiled and shook his hand and moved on.
He meant "Congratulations". It's something that's stayed dear to C's heart as a memory and now, anytime there's a call for a complimentary exclamation, shake-your-relations it is.
